Machine Quilting

For machine quilting, do I really need a walking foot?
I’m almost done with my first quilt. However, I’ve been told that I need a walking foot to finish it off. I’ve looked it up, and I don’t have the money to buy one (being a college student and all). I also don’t really know what it does. Any information is appreciated. Thank you for your time.
I’m going to assume that you are using a regular home sewing machine and plan to do your quilting on it. You don’t need a walking foot for the quilting part because you should actually drop the feed dog, or cover it so that YOU move the fabric rather than the machine grabbing and pulling it. What type of machine are you using?
It would be helpful to have the walking foot when adding the binding but I’ve done most of mine without one. The foot helps the top and bottom layer to move together rather than the bottom moving more than the top, which will cause puckers. I hope this helps you.

Machine Quilting Frame- 3 Main Types of Quilting Frames to Satisfy Your Needs
The quilting frames are stationery models manufactured for sewing machines. The machine slides back and forth along the frame. This is an intricate tool that should be crafted by an expert carpenter. It can be described as a long table without a flat surface on the top. Instead, a machine-quilting frame has a top made up of two parallel boards. Each board measure two by six by twelve foot and it is attached together by four other boards. Each of the four boards measures one by four by twenty four point five feet. The four boards, often called the cross members can accommodate any machine size. They can be lengthened if they are shorter than the cross members. Each board has a frame and each frame kit comes with an instruction manual. You will basically find three types of quilting frames:
- One is the full size frame
This frame becomes useful when a quilting expert wants to make larger quilts. It is often called a stretcher frame because any quilt you make appears fully lengthened. The four long boards that make up a full size frame are held together with C-clamps.
One of the advantages you get from using this frame is you do not need to baste. The frame stays tense through out. Even so, a full size frame requires a big space, which you may not have.
- The Q-Snap floor PVC frame
This is one of the best PVC type frames. It is made of premium quality polystyrene material, which is very durable. Q-Snap machine quilting frame has 1092 square inch quilting surface and it is thirty-one point five inches high. This allows more than one person to quilt at the same time.
To hold your quilt together, the Q-Snap has ribbed inner surface caps for clamping. Its tilt kit, which is bought separately, allows you to choose any angle when working. You do not have to hurt your back or strain your hands. Even an extension kit to increase the length is bought separately.
The Q-Snap’s main advantage is its low weight of ten point five pounds. This makes it portable especially because it comes with a carrying carton. You can use the same carton for storage. According to some Internet reviews, the only disadvantage arises when using the tense clamps.
- The three roller frame
This type of a frame has three bars. You start by attaching the backing and batting layers onto two roller bars. After this, attach the quilt top to the remaining roller bar. The three-roller frame eliminates the need to baste because it does not sag.
The main demerits of a three-roller frame are the continuous adjustments that you have to make. This type of a frame is available in different sizes and shapes. It is also made of different materials. You only have to buy a frame that fulfils your needs.
When buying the machine quilting frame, ensure to focus on your needs first. If you quilt full time and have extra quilters, you may have to consider the Q-Snap floor frame. There is a frame to go well with your every need on the Internet.
